Ukraine's Suspilne wins 2025 Gunnar Høidahl Award
 23 Oct 2025
Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne has won the 2025 Gunnar Høidahl Award for Excellence in the Eurovision News Exchange for resilience and professionalism under very difficult circumstances in the three and a half years since Russia invaded their country.

In that time, Suspilne has become the top contributing member to the Eurovision News Exchange, with more than 1.700 items contributed being used 21.000 times in 2025 so far.

EBU’s Algerian member EPTV won the Foreign Coverage Excellence Award for excellent reporting on the war in Gaza. EPTV’s coverage has been critical in helping members tell the story of the dire situation on the ground when the Israeli authorities have blocked access to the territory by foreign media.

The Breaking News Excellence Award went to our Swiss member SRG SSR for their impressive and timely coverage of the devastating collapse of a glacier that engulfed and destroyed the village of Blatten, in the canton of Valais, in May.

The awards were presented at the annual EBU News Assembly, on 21–23 October, in Naples, Italy.

The Eurovision News Exchange (EVN) supports EBU Members and the critical role of public service media in delivering the most relevant and trustworthy coverage through round-the-clock access to live and edited news stories.

“We’re thrilled to receive the award and proud to maintain a leading role in the Eurovision News Exchange on the fourth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” said Khrystyna Havryliuk, Suspilne's Head of News.

She added: “At a time when the world is hearing statements about the need to end the war at any cost, it is crucial for us to give a voice to Ukrainians – and the EVN provides this opportunity to us.”

Nominees for the Gunnar Høidahl Award and the other prizes are submitted by the EBU’s Geneva news editors, with the winner chosen by the whole Eurovision News Exchange team.

Emilio San Pedro, Head of EVN, paid tribute to Suspilne’s consistent professionalism, the quality of their contributions and resilience amid an ongoing Russian invasion.

“Our Ukrainian colleagues are in constant contact with our news desk and are always the first to let us know of a breaking news development in connection with the war or any other major story in Ukraine, providing excellent advance warnings of upcoming events to our planning editors,” said San Pedro.

The other nominees for the Gunnar Høidahl Award were Spain’s RTVE, a frequent nominee which last won the award in 2023, and RTP from Portugal – another previous winner of the award and last nominated in 2022.

EVN is the largest video and audio news exchange of its kind, providing broadcast services for journalists worldwide. The unique service is based on the shared values of solidarity, reciprocity and cooperation among EBU Members who have been sharing news content every day for more than 60 years.
